Philip Margo, one of the founding members of the popular vocal group The Tokens, has died at the age of 79. The doo-wop foursome had made their mark with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” an adaptation of South African singer Solomon Linda’s work. In December 1961, the track earned them the No. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. According to his family, the singer was hospitalized in Los Angeles and passed away after suffering a stroke. Margo leaves behind his wife, three children, and eight grandchildren.
