Rebecca McEntire is synonymous with her hit single “I’m a Survivor,” but little did she know that the title of that track would mean so much to her in her 60s. One of the biggest names in country music, McEntire survived a nasty collapse that could have cost her her life. Here’s what happened.

Window rescue

Country superstar Reba McEntire scrambled out of a window of a 100-year-old building in Atoka, Okla., after the staircase collapsed. She took to Twitter to reassure her fans that she and her team were okay. She also credited the police and fire department for the prompt rescue. Page Six could not get a comment from the Atoka Police Department immediately. However, Oklahoma news reporter Lisanne Anderson posted a video showing firefighters rescuing McEntire, Rex Linn, and seven others with a ladder.

McEntire unharmed

In the clip, McEntire climbs down a ladder with ease and raises her hands above her head to catch a sweater thrown through the window she has just escaped from. Actor Linn, who has appeared on such shows as “CSI: Miami” and “Better Call Saul,” has not made a statement regarding the incident. TMZ stated that after McEntire’s rescue, the second-and third-story stairs collapsed completely. The Grammy award-winning singer has not issued any statements about whether she will sue the property owners.

Unexpected collapse

According to TMZ’s report, the 66-year-old had just reached the second floor of an unnamed historical site with her boyfriend, Rex Linn. Shortly after that, the stairs crumbled beneath them. After the incident, she tweeted, “While my team and I were in Atoka, OK yesterday checking out an old historical building, a staircase collapsed. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. We were safely evacuated from the building thanks to the quick response from the Atoka fire and police departments.”

Director’s statement

Travis Mullins, director of emergency management for the city of Atoka, told KXII that the staircase collapsed all the way from the second story to the third. The staircase fell onto the stairs between the first and second floors—trapping everyone in the building. Speaking with the local broadcaster, Mullins said, “It opened our eyes to see exactly just how unsturdy they were and when they did collapse, we [saw] what little was holding them up.”  McEntire’s team was touring the downtown Atoka building for a “future project,” KXII stated.

McEntire focusing on relationship

During her podcast “Living & Learning with Reba McEntire,” the country singer revealed that she was dating Linn. She said, “It’s good to have a person to talk to, laugh with, get into subjects about what’s going on, discussions about our past, our family, funny stories, him being an actor, me being an actress. He’s very into my music. I’m very into his career. It’s just great getting to talk to somebody who I find very interesting, very funny, very smart, and is interested in me, too.”
